With the Fujifilm X100F through Southeast Asia

When it comes to Travel Photography I hear a lot of questions which gear may be the best. Should You switch to a DSLR and a whole parade of lenses, or is something small and compact better?

Being Familiar with Your Camera

I prefer to use the gear that I am already familiar with and wouldn't switch anything. In Berlin, I use the Fujifim X100F and even though You might be scared to only have a fixed-focal-length camera with You and might miss some shots, this isn't really a problem. I am facing the same "problem" while photographing in Berlin and so far I have not run into a scene, that was impossible to photograph with this camera.

Instead of buying new gear just for a journey, use the camera that You are already familiar with and use it its maximum potential.

Hanoi

My first stop was Hanoi and I absolutely love this city and its small alleys as well as the characteristic of the sun.

Hanoi is famous for its train track which allows for some great leading lines, but also coffee and relaxation. Especially in the morning or evening hours when the sun is lower, the long drawn tracks are a great opportunity to get decent shots.

Normally, Hanoi is a very busy place and the train tracks are a great change of pace.

In this city, the Fujifilm X100F can also show its great versatility. Whether You are out shooting on the markets in old-town, the train tracks or visiting the Hoan-Kiem Lake at night, the camera always performs well. Crowded places, low light situations or directly into the sun, the X100F is suitable for all these situations.

The hardest Challenge in Indonesia

After Hanoi, I visited Saigon and Jakarta, which were great cities also, but not that different from Hanoi when it comes to travel photography.

On the contrary, in East Java, a real adventure waited for me and my photography. I planned to stay for a few weeks in the Indonesian Jungle and wanted to document the life in a remote village, as well as the miners at the Mount Ijen nearby.

Already on the second evening, my homestay's host invited me to the wedding of his cousin. I didn't know what to expect and how a traditional Indonesian wedding would look like. So I brought also my external flash with me because it gets dark very early there.

It was the right choice and in combination with the X100F, I managed to get some decent shots of the bride & groom, as well of the wedding party.

On the technical side, I like to pre-focus my camera to around 1.5 ~ 2 meters and use an aperture of f/8 or f/11. In low-light, the auto-focus can be a little weak, but by pre-focusing, I can circumvent this problem and still get my shots.

Mount Ijen

Then I arrived at the main reason of my journey - the Mount Ijen.

The mountain is best known for its "Blue Fire" at night and the reason why tourists, usually go there at the evening and leave in the early morning hours.

My purpose was different as I wanted to document the miners and their incredible hard job.

Mount Ijen is a volcano mountain and home to one of the largest sulfur source.

The miners carry manually up 70kg of sulfur on their back up and down the crater. What is already a difficult path without the weight on my shoulders and takes more than an hour, is even more of a challenge for the miners.

But they aren't satisfied with this one load, they do this tour four times during a work day, bringing around 280kg to the buyer.

Going down the crater and photographing at the same time is a huge challenge. From the bottom of the crater, toxic sulfur smokes rises and the wind is very unpredictable.

Apart from my own health, I was already afraid how my X100F would work in this environment. I didn't take any precautions for the camera aside from a new lens hood.

Of course, I wanted to get close and dive right into the scene, which meant that the camera was also exposed to the sulfur smoke and the dust.

Gas masks are mandatory when descending to the bottom of the crater, but my camera didn't have any additional protection.

Arriving at the bottom I photographed the direct mining of the sulfur, which normally no tourist is able to witness. Standing for around 20 minutes in the smoke, I could feel my lungs and eyes burn, but at the same time was very happy with the performance of the camera.

Escaping this surreal place I was very afraid that the camera would have taken damage from a long time in the smoke & dust.

Two months later, the camera still performs very well and has endured this tour very well. Some buttons are a little stiff, but this is honestly not a big problem for me and I am confident that with a little more time they will also improve again.

My conclusion is now, that it doesn't take a lot of gear or different equipment for such a journey where You are facing a lot of different places and events. For me, my Fujifilm X100F was more than sufficient and even survived toxic sulphur smoke.

I am sure, with any other setup I wouldn't be as happy and wouldn't change anything for the next trip."

Lurking In Shadows

Photography and music have leapfrogged each other for almost all of my life. Photography kicked in during my early teens with adventures in the school darkroom. Music arrived not long after that in the form of the tenor saxophone and the battle to be my number one was on. Sometimes the photographer would be ahead, sometimes it was the musician in me.

Where the two overlapped was my love of music photography. Quite often that could be rock and roll photography in Rolling Stone Magazine form, but my true love of music photographs was jazz, especially work by the great Herman Leonard. But strange as it may seem I didn't think about mixing my two loves until April 2013.

I'm a member of The Kage Collective (pronounced Ka-gay) and I was looking for a quick project to use as content for our monthly output. I decided to contact Tommy Smith about going along to a Scottish National Jazz Orchestra concert (Tommy is the director of the orchestra) and documenting both behind the scenes and the actual performance. That one night developed into a long-term project that I am still working on to this day as their official photographer. I've also shot a handful of jazz CD covers and even had the cover of Jazzwise magazine too.

It's hard to explain what I'm trying to capture in my music photography, but every now and then, when I squeeze the shutter button, I feel I've captured a true moment, something timeless that would sit perfectly in any of the jazz photography books on my bookshelf. These moments only exist for 1/125th of a second and they're gone. There is nothing before and nothing after...it's a heartbeat. I see a lot of these moments in my viewfinder, but by the time I see them, they're already gone. That's why they come once in a blue moon. Sure, there are hundreds of keepers during a gig, but these special moments are much more elusive.

So I'll keep trying to find these pure moments as I'm lurking in shadows and hoping my trigger finger is one step ahead of my eye. In this age of the smartphone and the constant snapping of hundreds of thousands of pictures each day, I think we all question the relevance of our pictures. But with an archive of over 47,000 jazz photographs, I have to believe there is historical value in what I'm doing. Time will tell.

Offering the first in-body image stabilisation (IBIS) system to feature in an X Series camera, the X-H1 harnesses three axial accelerometers, three axial Gyro sensors, and a specially developed dual-processor.  Combined, this achieves the high speed of approximately 10,000 calculations per second.  When unified with compensating mechanisms, the result is uncompromising image quality and precision with performance as described below.

(1) 5-axis image stabilisation is possible with all XF and XC lenses.

(2) Up to a maximum of 5.5 stops image stabilisation, is possible when the camera is used with all XF lenses that do not include optical image stabilisation technology.

The following technical breakthroughs have been developed to support this high precision performance:

-       A laser measurement device is used during the process of manufacturing the image stabilization unit, controlling component flatness and position with twice the precision of standard components.

-       The assembly process also includes inspection and adjustment of each individual camera to ensure that even when image stabilization is used, the parallel position of the sensor is achieved with micro-order accuracy equivalent to previous models.

-       In addition, a new spring mechanism has been included to reduce micro-vibrations caused by operation of the mechanical shutter.

-       The photographer may also choose to use the electronic front curtain shutter or the electronic shutter, virtually eliminating the effect of vibrations to maximise the benefits of image stabilisation.

The X-H1 uses the APS-C size X-Trans™ CMOS III (*3) sensor (24.30 million pixels, without low-pass filter) and the high-speed image processing engine X-Processor Pro. This proprietary FUJIFILM technology was first seen in the X-Pro2 and then X-T2 cameras, receiving many awards globally. When used in combination with the extremely high-quality FUJINON lens, as well as the unique color reproduction technology developed by FUJIFILM more than 8 decades ago, the X-H1 produces outstanding, unrivaled quality images recording the finest details of the subject including texture, three-dimensional structure and even the atmosphere and vibe of a particular scene.

*3 X-Trans is a trademark or registered trademark of FUJIFILM. The X-Trans CMOS III sensor uses a unique non-periodic filter array to reduce the appearance of moire patterns and false colors even without an optical low-pass filter.images and videos to paired smartphones and tablet devices, using the free smart-device app “FUJIFILM Camera Remote”.

2. Highly robust, durable body and easy operability results in comfortable shooting across a wide range of environments

In addition to the camera's dust-resistant, water-resistant properties, and the ability to operate in temperatures as low as -10°C, the camera also uses a 25% thicker magnesium alloy compared to the X-T2. FUJIFILM has also modified the structure for attaching the mount, resulting in a more compact size and lighter weight body that maintains high precision and strong resistance to impact shock torsion and other sources of deformation. Increased particle size on the camera's external surface provides a high-quality scratch-resistant coating with a surface hardness equivalent to 8H.

The viewfinder is a high-magnification, high-precision electronic viewfinder. The magnification ratio of 0.75 times and the 3.69 million resolution leads the class for mirrorless cameras. The viewfinder display is extraordinarily smooth, with a display time lag of just 0.005 seconds and a frame rate of 100 frames per second, allowing the photographer to instantly confirm the movement of the subject and position of the focus with great precision.

The rear LCD monitor is a 3-direction tilt, 3-inch, 1.04 million dot electrostatic touch-panel LCD which can be intuitively set to the desired angle. In addition, the 1.28 inch sub-LCD on the top of the camera, a current feature of the medium format FUJIFILM GFX 50S, allows for instant confirmation of shooting information.

3. Improved operability with a total of 19 modifications based on feedback from professional photographers

The camera uses a large-grip design with the new shape and a leaf-spring switch for the shutter-release button to achieve a stable feel when holding the camera and easy operation of the shutter-release button to ensure no opportunities are missed.

The camera has the quietest shutter sound of all cameras in the X Series, making it an ideal tool for environments where quietness is required such as when shooting animals in the wild, quiet performances or at weddings.

A new AF-ON button has been added to the back of the camera. This makes it easier to operate the autofocus with the thumb, allowing the photographer to focus on using their index finger to operate the shutter-release button. In addition, other modifications have been made to improve operability, including the enlargement of the buttons on the rear of the camera and improvements to the grip of the front and rear command dials.

The X-H1 also features focus lever that facilitates rapid, accurate movement to the desired focus point.

4. Comprehensive range of video features to support movie production requirements

The X-H1 is the first camera in the X Series to include ETERNA, a new film simulation ideal for shooting movies. This mode simulates cinematic film, creating understated colors and rich shadow tones, greatly enhancing creative freedom during post-processing. The camera's video image quality has been improved through the new ability to record a high bit rate of 200 Mbps.

The camera includes a total of 20 functional and performance improvements including the 1080/120P high-speed video mode (1/2, 1/4 and 1/5 speed slow motion) for recording spectacular slow-motion footage, F-log*4 SD card recording which aids smooth workflow, a DCI 4K shooting mode (4096×2160), a 400% dynamic range setting (approximately 12 stops), 200 Mbps high bit rate recording, a high-sound quality internal microphone (24 bit/48 kHz) and verbal time codes.

*4 The colour space is defined according to ITU-R BT.2020.

5. The first flicker reduction mode on an X Series Camera and improved AF algorithms enhance shooting toughness

Flicker reduction modes are essential for indoor sport photography, and the X-H1 achieves this using a mirrorless camera, allowing for stable exposure during burst shots even under fluorescent and mercury lighting.

In addition, improvements to the AF algorithm have achieved the following performance enhancements:

-       The low-light limit for phase detection auto-focus has been improved by approximately 1.5 stops from 0.5EV to -1.0EV, raising the precision and speed of auto-focus in low-light environments.

-       The range at minimum aperture has been expanded from F8 to F11. For example, even when using the XF100-400mmF4.5-5.6 R LM OIS WR with the teleconverter XF2X TC WR, phase detection auto-focus can now be used.

-       Major improvements have been made to the AF-C performance while operating the zoom, which provides major benefits when shooting sports and other scenarios in which the subjects moves unpredictably.

-       Subjects where results with phase detection auto-focus were previously poor, such as finely-detailed surface textures; wild birds and wild animals, can now be captured at high speed and with high precision.

6. Dedicated separate accessories to support the system

Vertical power boost grip VPB-XH1 *Exclusively for the X-H1

-       Dust-resistant and water-resistant, the grip operates at temperatures of down to -10°C. Two batteries may be attached, with a third battery in the body of the camera increasing the maximum number of available shots in normal mode to approximately 900. In boost mode, multiple batteries can be used simultaneously, improving performance for burst shots and reducing the interval between shots, shutter time lag, and the blackout period.

-       In addition, the accessory also increases the maximum period for shooting movies in 4K to about 30 minutes, making the VPB-XH1 an essential accessory for maximising the performance of the X-H1.

-       Controls include the shutter-release button, focus lever, AE-L button, AF-ON button, command dial, Q button, and Fn button, providing the same easy operation when using the camera in both the vertical and horizontal positions.

-       The VPB-XH1 is equipped with a headphone socket, allowing the operator to monitor sound while recording video.

-       The grip also includes recharging capability. The included AC adaptor (AC-9VS) can be used to recharge two batteries simultaneously over approximately 2 hours.

Wide-eye cup EC-XH-W *Common for X Series and GFX cameras

-       The wide cup covers a broad area around the eye, greatly reducing light interference and enhancing concentration during long shoots.

-       The eye cup can also be rotated in 90° increments, making it adaptable for either the left eye or the right eye and for shooting in either vertical or horizontal position. The cup also includes anti-static coating, reducing the adherence of dust.

Fujinon XC15-45mm F3.5-5.6 OIS PZ

This new lens will complement the existing lineup of interchangeable lenses for Fujifilm’s "X Series" mirrorless digital camera range, which provides outstanding photographic image quality with its own color reproduction technology. This new lens covers the frequently used focal length from 23mm to 69mm in the 35mm equivalent, and is the smallest and most lightweight interchangeable zoom lens compatible with the "X series". Combine this lens with a Fujifilm compact, lightweight mirrorless digital camera and you can enjoy excellent portability and comfortable shooting.

The FUJINON XC15-45mmF3.5-5.6 OIS PZ lens achieves high-resolution images while maintaining a compact size 44.2mm*1 and a light weight of 135g. The optical design incorporates 10 lenses in 9 groups, including three aspherical lenses and two ED lenses. It covers a focal length from a wide angle 23mm to a medium telephoto 69mm (in 35mm equivalent) which makes it an ideal lens for both landscape photography and portrait photography. At the widest available angle setting, it is possible to take photographs of subjects as close as 5cm from the end of the lens, achieving a maximum reproduction ratio of 0.24, perfect for photographing food and small accessories. With the XC15-45mmF3.5-5.6 OIS PZ, customers will be able to shoot a wide variety of scenes.

The image stabilization function supports handheld photography in low light environments. A stepping motor is used to control changes in focus position which produces quick and quiet autofocus operation. The lens is available in two colours, silver or black.

Product features

Smaller and more lightweight than any other interchangeable zoom lens within the X Series camera range

The composition of 10 lenses in 9 groups, including three aspherical lenses and two ED lenses, provides excellent resolution at all zoom positions, while measuring just 44.2mm long and weighing only 135g.

Covers frequently used focal lengths

This new lens covers the frequently used focal length from 23mm to 69mm (in 35mm equivalent) which makes it a suitable lens for shooting both landscape and portrait photography. Because the wide angle end is equivalent to 23mm, this lens will be suitable for capturing self-portraits featuring multiple people or backgrounds when using with a camera with a 180° tilting LCD screen, such as the new X-A5.

Ability to shoot close-up, 5cm from the lens tip

Using the widest angle position, the lens allows photographers to shoot subjects which are around 5cm from the end of the lens, achieving a maximum reproduction ratio of 0.24. This lens is ideal for those wanting to take close-up shots of food, flowers or small accessories.

Electric zoom and comfortable operation

Creating a small, collapsible lens has been made possible by utilising an electric zoom. When the camera is switched on, the lens automatically extends ready for shooting. Two different zoom speeds can be selected by the rotating of the zoom ring. The lens moves position at a constant speed, producing smooth zooming motion when shooting movies.

When interval shooting, the lens can collapse and return to the initial wide angle position with each shot.

This means that with this lens, interval shooting can be used only at the 15mm wide end (this does not apply when using X-A5).

New Fujifilm X-A5

Fujifilm have announced that they will be releasing their new stylish, smallest and lightest mirrorless digital camera within their X Series... the Fujifilm X-A5.

The Fujifilm X-A5 will have a new 24.2 megapixel APS-C sensor that is capable of producing the X Series signature colour reproduction.

The X-A5 will also feature a newly developed lens, 4k movie recording, touch screen and Bluetooth pairing technology which as seen in other recent cameras allows the immediate transfer of the image to compatible mobile/tablet devices and to the new Instax SP-3 Square format printer.

The X-A5 combines a newly developed 24.2 megapixel APS-C sensor with the image processing engine to achieve Fujifilm’s renowned photo quality. Combined with the supplied FUJINON lens, the camera boasts ultimate image resolution, recording the subject’s texture, form and even the atmosphere of the scene.  The camera outperforms previous models in its scene recognition accuracy in SR+ AUTO mode, color reproduction performance and “skin tone reproduction” capability, which is particularly popular. This makes the X-A5 the perfect choice for photographing human subjects, which account for approximately 50% of all subject matter*4. The regular range of ISO sensitivity has also been extended to ISO12800. Camera shake and noise are reduced in low light conditions and when shooting a fast-moving subject for enhanced image quality. The X-A5 is the first X-A Series model to feature phase detection pixels, originally developed for the X series’ high end models. The Intelligent Hybrid AF system focuses twice as fast as previous models, ensuring that you capture those photographic moments more swiftly and beautifully.

The X-A5 debuts the new FUJINON XC15-45mmF3.5-5.6 OIS PZ, the first electric-powered zoom lens for the X Mount.  This lightweight and compact zoom makes the photographic experience easier and more comfortable than ever before.  The lens has the minimum working distance of just 5cm*5, ideal for clear close-up shots, such as food photography.  The smooth electric-powered zooming mechanism that starts from the wide-angle 23mm end (35mm film format equivalent) gives greater freedom in composition framing for both still images and video.

The X-A5 is equipped with a large rear LCD monitor that can rotate 180 degrees. When the panel is rotated 180 degrees, the Rear Command Dial automatically switches to the Zoom and Shutter Release function for fail-safe composition when shooting “selfies (self-portraits).” The 180-degree rotation of the rear LCD monitor also activates the Eye AF function automatically to create high quality self-portraits with sharp focus on the subject’s eyes. The Portrait Enhancer Mode, offers its popular ability to produce beautiful skin tone, and has also evolved with the new user interface.  Users can select from three levels of skin tone enhancement with touch-screen operation for easy, natural and flattering self-portraits.

The X-A5 offers 11 variations of Fujifilm’s unique Film Simulation Modes, making adding an advanced artistic flair easy with the reproduction of film-like colour tones. The camera also features 17 variations of Advanced Filters including the new “Fog Remove” and “HDR Art.”

The rear LCD monitor uses the new touch-panel GUI, facilitating intuitive touch-panel operation using fingertips so that you can check the effect of Advanced Filters and Film Simulations for added usability.

The Exposure Compensation Dial now has the range expanded from ±3EV to ±5EV to boost freedom in photographic expressions.

The Bluetooth® Low Energy technology has been incorporated for quick, easy and automatic transfer of still images and videos to paired smartphones and tablet devices, using the free smart-device app “FUJIFILM Camera Remote”.

The X-A5 offers a High-Speed HD Video function, allowing users to record HD video up to quad speed for slow motion clips.  The Multi Focus Mode automatically stacks 4K quality images, whilst cleverly changing the depth of field setting required.  Also provided is the 4K Burst function of shooting 15 frames per second in 4K image quality. These new 4K video capabilities and accompanying functions enable artistic expressions of greater creativity.

The use of energy-saving design means the X-A5 now offers the class-leading number of frames per charge. Users can shoot as many as 450 frames per single battery charge, making the camera ideal for travelling and photography on the move.

Thanks to the X-A5’s latest WiFi®*7 technology, the camera is the ideal companion to the SHARE SP-3 printer, the first square format printer to join the iconic INSTAX range. Over recent years, the desire for nostalgia has risen, as young people move to take their memories offline and into a physical format to last a lifetime. The new X-A5 and the SHARE SP-3 are the perfect partnership to do so, as users can select their favourite moments from the camera and turn them into something immediately tangible.
